Panel Description:
This course combines a focused presentation with an interactive “Ask the Experts” panel featuring industry professionals experienced in designing and constructing with Concrete Masonry Units (CMU). Topics include delegated design, constructability, embodied carbon and sustainability strategies, thermal mass and energy performance, and lifecycle cost considerations. Through guided discussion and real-world examples, attendees will gain practical insight into the performance, value, and long-term benefits of concrete masonry systems.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Frank Sciame
SCIAME CONSTRUCTION

Frank J. Sciame Jr., regarded by many as the builder of choice for highly designed and technically sophisticated projects, founded Sciame Construction in 1975. In recognition of his dedication to preserving New York City landmarks, Sciame received the Chairman’s Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 1997 and the Municipal Art Society’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal in 2023. In 2006, he was appointed by Governor George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg to lead the effort to ensure a buildable World Trade Center Memorial.

Sciame is the former President of both the CCNY Alumni Association and the City College Fund. In 2024, he became Chairman of the Foundation for City College. He is a recipient of the Townsend Harris Medal, the John H. Finley Award, and an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts.

Notable New York projects completed by Sciame Construction include the Morgan Library, The Shed, the new Studio Museum in Harlem, The Perelman Performing Arts Center, and FDR Four Freedoms Park. The firm has also led numerous significant restoration and renovation projects, including work for Trinity Church, the Frick Collection, and Central Synagogue.

Dennis Vermeulen, AIA
MARVEL
 

Dennis joined Marvel in 2012, merging design and visual art expertise with a strategic eye toward sustainability. Dennis aims to engage, activate and foster vibrant, inclusive urban communities through the built environment. Recent cultural and civic work includes Marvel’s re-envisioning of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, resiliency efforts for Manhattans Seaport and Financial Districts and complex projects of Pierhouse and the 1 Hotel in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Dennis received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University, and prior to his tenure at Marvel, worked with major institutions and design firms, including Frank Gehry Architects, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
